I just wanted to mention I got to see the Golden Compass trailer right before POTC3, and holy crap.
I've been playing it cool ever since it went into production, not looking at production stills (with the exception of Nicole Kidman's costumes since I knew they'd be gorgeous) or looking for news about it online since my heart has been broken too many times with bad movie adaptations.

(I do admit I'm already bitching about the changing of Iofur Raknison's name to Ragnar Sturlusson, but that nitpicking is almost instantly quelled with the knowledge that IAN FUCKING McSHANE will be voicing the character--sure, Ragnar will probably not say "cocksucker" at any point in the movie but fucking Ian McShane!)

But oh good lord, the trailer looks so beautiful and I have such high hopes for the movie. I even found myself whispering, "please don't suck."

But onto pirates! Arrrrrrgh!

First off, omg Norrington! My poor Hottington. Even though he got his sword back and was covered in even more brocade (he was a golden little cupcake), he chose the wrong side but in the "true hero's journey" fashion, realized his mistake, did the right thing and had an honorable death and a defiant stab at Davy Jones. He even got some lovely last words. I'm also currently insanely jealous of Keira Knightley since she has now gotten to kiss all the hot men in all three movies now.

I was caught off guard when Sao Feng died so soon but I did not really mind the giant hunk of ship in his chest after he tried to force himself onto Elizabeth, telling her he'd be willing take her rage if not her favor. I also did like the little "sorry for assaulting you, you can have my ship and take my place as one of the nine pirate lords" before he died. I also really liked her outfit in this scene. Too bad she switched to a less pretty outfit and hat in later scenes.

So I was kind of peeved and sort of happy that the movie had such a bittersweet end: it couldn't really end as happily as CotBP with the emotional turmoil of Elizabeth and Will's inability to share their burdens, the fate of Bootstrap, the loss of Norrington and it was pretty damn obvious the Dutchman was going to get a new captain.

I did enjoy the sort of bait and switch. It really did seem Jack was going to help Will by stabbing Davy Jones' heart so Will didn't have to, so Will could be with Elizabeth and free Bootstrap at the same time, but I completely forgot about Will's "touch of destiny."

I am fully embracing the explanation that if the Dutchman's captain met his true love on shore in 10 years, the curse would be lifted. Before the scene after the credits showed up and my sister emailed me this tidbit, I was totally, "seriously? they're only going to see each other every 10 years? As pirate king, can Elizabeth board the Dutchman at all? Dude, every 10 years?! Every time they'll see each other, it will be a conjugal visit! And will Will ask one of his men to stab his heart so he can join Elizabeth when she dies of old age?"

This detail about the curse also totally explains why Davy Jones is so pissed at Calypso, and because she is a Greek demigoddess, I am surprised he expected fidelity. And we got to see Bill Nighy's real face and what Davy Jones looked like before he became corrupted. His beard was still tentacley! Glad to know Davy has no qualms using his tentacles to kill, especially Beckett's man (haha, that's what you get for killing Jim Hawkins' dad!). I kind of wish they threw in a little bit more of Calypso into DMC mythology, more than just Davy Jones loved a woman who was wild and untamed like the sea-- though it does take a special kind of woman, certainly more than just a mortal woman, to love a squidface, and to hurt him so deeply, he has to cut out his heart and to spark a perfect, single emo tear!

I am very surprised only me and this one other guy stayed behind for after the credits. There is always something after the credits, people, haven' t you learned it by now?!

I did like the trippy, multiple Jack sequences but the first one ran just a little too long. I really liked Jack having Angel/Devil versions of himself on his shoulders. I also really dug Dutchman crewman Jack, who like Wyvern, could pull out his brain (and lick it, ewwwwwwwww!).

Oh, my poor Hottington!

Haha, Barbossa is a bad lover and it takes Ragetti to show him how it's done. And he did so well, Calypso left him a present in his pants.

Were we supposed to understand what Calypso was saying when she turned into the 50-foot woman? All I could hear was "blah blah argh" and what I discerned to be "fuck you" in monster language. I did expect more than just maelstrom as a show of her sea goddess rage but I guess once she got Davy Jones' body, she was satisfied.

I know I have more to say but maybe later when my brain isn't mush.
