Cookie me!
Apr. 6th, 2005 06:54 pmThrough most of the weekend, I was riding the bloodlust high from watching Sin City.
(Still not ready to discuss the wonky gender politics because still suffering from too many "Oh, Mr. Frodo!" moments and much snickering at the possiblilty of a Gilmore Girls/Sin City crossover--and maybe I'll finally watch the damn show even though Jane Espenson is no longer writing for it.)
Dropped iPod onto pavement this morning. Everything is still working, and the screen is fine but it now has a very deep scratch with very sharp edges in the corner.
*is sad*
eta: grammar is good

Brad Bird is so cute.
Mar. 1st, 2005 06:10 pm( A super happy Brad Bird )
I think Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Incredibles were the only nominated pictures I saw this year. Either my taste has gone to crap or the Academy is missing out some cool stuff (like Shaun of the Dead!).
Brad Bird would so be my super sekrit boyfriend if it weren't for the freakish resemblance to Syndrome.
OMG,
Katie and
Lydia, you still have not seen the Incredibles?! You suck so much! Maybe even more so than teh Hank. ;p
eta: it turns out I've seen 5 of the nominated movies: beside Harry Potter and the Incredibles, I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Shrek 2 and Troy.

It's that time of year again
Jan. 25th, 2005 12:18 pmThe nominees for Best Animated Featured Film:
"The Incredibles"
"Shark Tale"
"Shrek 2"
I will be royally pissed if the Incredibles lose though I do have the sneaking suspicion Shrek 2 will get the Oscar.

I'm disappointed there is no commentary on the Harry Potter and PoA DVD, though the random Thewlis in the "Tour Lupin's Classroom" was nice (Werewolves! Werewolves! Werewolves!).
Still have not seen the Gargoyles season 1 box set or the special edition Iron Giant.
I also have In the Mood for Love and the Cooler among rentals that have to be seen and sent back NOW.

A special DVD of the Iron Giant will be out on November 16, 2004!
There's commentary!
*dies*
*rises again as a zombie*
And Greg Weisman says the first season of Gargoyles will be out on December 7, 2004.

eta: Wow, I have never seen a Akira Kurosawa film (except for those 5 minutes of Seven Samurai).
Mozart's "Dies Irae" is a pretty popular piece.
It was on my winamp playlist and I couldn't remember why I had downloaded it.
I googled it to see if had been used in any tv shows or movies, and the first three things to pop up were The Battle Royale trailer, the X-Files episode "Biogenesis" (when Scully sees the ship) and when Nightcrawler is in the White House in X2.
The sad thing is I could have downloaded it for any of those three reasons.

Troy isn't so much based on The Iliad than it is based on common knowledge about the Trojan War (kind of like O, Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Odyssey): Helen leaving her husband, Menelaus, for Paris, Prince of Troy; Achilles is a hard ass; there's a Trojan Horse, and there's a moment with someone's heel.
My inner Greek Civ/myth geek cringed a bit at the way some things got turned around (the Greek gods make no appearances a la Clash of the Titans) and reinterpreted (such as "Achilles is straight, damn it! Do you hear me, STRAIGHT!"), but more on that later.
The movie wasn't inspiringly good, where I wanted to stand up and say, "Damn, Wolfgang, you done good!" It was entertaining enough and for everyone who came to see the pretteh, it delivered.
( gripes, spoilers and the highlights )
Anyway, more info at Bulfinch's Mythology, The Mortal Women of the Trojan War and Pantheon.org.
To the little bitches sitting next to me during the movie: you have no idea how much I wanted to stab you repeatedly in the thigh to stop your inane chatter!
ETA: Corrected info about Andromache and added more links.

I'm a little disappointed that Eric Bana didn't keep his 70s pr0n star hair and beard, because that look really suited him.
And dude! Look at how he towers over the BEAN!
Dead people make good movies
Mar. 29th, 2004 04:49 pmI spent a good chunk of the weekend watching movies where no one (the actors, the directors, the make-up people) are alive today.
Most notably The Great Ziegfeld and Gaslight.
( movies )
ETA: Angela Landsbury is not dead.

Checking out other people's icons can teach you all sort of odd things.
If I didn't already have useless information about DC characters, I can now add one more to the list: THE HECKLER.
He only has two special abilities: heckling and punctuality. He's cool and useful, like Carpeted Man!
Too bad the comic only had six issues and came out during a time when I had no interest in comics, because I so would have bought a comic called "The Coming of the Four Mopeds of the Apocalypse."
Speaking of odd superheroes, the superhero edition of Bad Movie Night (with the live-action Tick and the Specials) draws nigh. w00t!

Because you're worth it
Dec. 20th, 2003 06:24 pmApparently, Ben Affleck has made an European shampoo ad for L'Oreal.
I suspect this will inspire me to do even more embarrassing things to my Bartleby doll. Speaking of the upcoming Dogma inaction figures, where are the Metatron and God figures?!
So coming this spring, the two films I'm obligated to see are Jersey Girl and Hidalgo.
